Chapter 27

The Garage.

34 minutes later . . .

I'm sitting in the NSX, waiting to decide whether or not I have the emotional strength to go meet Stephanie. My mind is not in the same orbit as it was a few hours ago when we last talked on the phone. When Gary finally told me the entire story, I didn't know what to say.

Or how to react.

Nothing seems stable and permanent right now.

My entire existence is in flux.

Flawed by my truth that has now been exposed for lies.

What I thought I knew, and the people I thought were responsible for that, everything and everyone has changed. I'm staring at the key in the ignition, it's just dangling there, barely any movement left as it pendulum swings back and forth. I glance down at my dormant cell phone.

Key?

Cell phone?

Stephanie?

Reflection?

I pick up the phone and dial her number. And it doesn't take long. She answers on the second ring with, “Where are you, Trevor?” Her tone is direct and anxious.

“Maybe we should do this another night,” I offer.

“What's wrong?” she asks, her voice suddenly becoming almost worried. “Did something happen?”

Yes.

“Are you alright?”

I don't know.

“Well, are you hurt?”

No. Yes. I'm not sure. I just learned a whole bunch of stuff about my family and it's all . . . I can't explain it.

“Come get me,” she says softly.

Why? I don't think I'd be much use to you right now. My head's just not in it . . . neither of them.

“Come and pick me up, Trevor. We'll get something to eat and just talk. Nothing about sex.”

But you said you didn't want to date. You said it wouldn't work.

“Are all boys stupid?”

Just this one, I say to her.

“I like you, Trevor. Like like. So come and get me . . . now!”

“Okay,” I say. “I'll be over in fifteen or twenty minutes.”

And as I'm about to disconnect the call she says, “Trevor?”

Yeah?

“Whatever it is . . . it will be alright.” Her voice is a kind of tender that I've never heard from her. Really, it's more caring and thoughtful than any voice I've ever heard, period. And it makes me want to smile. But my face is just too heavy for that.

“I'll see you in a few minutes, Stephanie,” I say as I end the call.

And then I slide the key slowly home into the ignition. The dash and all of the space-age looking accessories suddenly illuminate. I could be sitting in the cockpit of a stealth fighter right now. The engine purrs to life as I hit a button for the garage door.

With every inch the door rises I see a little more cerulean blue from the night's sky pouring in. I hope the moon is still in the sky. If it isn't, though, I won't be too shocked.

On my way slowly down the drive, Gary and Bruce wave at me while arguing over a choice of perennials to replace the pink ones in the front-most flowerbeds.
